Meet Mrs. Henrietta Calandro.  Henrietta has been a regular library patron for many years.   She was born at her family home on North 11th Street in Murphysboro on January 13, 1926.  She recalls walking to the Murphysboro City Library alone when she was about nine or ten years old.  At that time, she explains, “the library was located on the second floor over the Woolworth store at 12th and Walnut.  Mrs.  Pickler was librarian with a penny a day fine for late return of books.”

She and her late husband, Andrew had four children: Mark, Christopher, Dan and Andrea.  During World War II, she worked at Wright-Patterson Air Field in Dayton, Ohio using the “new” IBM business machines.  Upon returning to Murphysboro, she was on staff at City National Bank until her retirement in 1983.

Pearl S. Buck is one of Calandro’s favorite authors.  Many of Buck’s books are set in China.  Calandro has visited China twice.  She also recently visited Buck’s home in Pennsylvania where she saw the desk and the typewriter that Pearl S. Buck used to write one of her most famous works, The Good Earth.  Calandro has also visited all 50 states and 46 countries on 6 continents.

Some of her other favorite authors include:  Jeffrey Archer, Ken Follett, John Grisham, Ernest Hemingway, and Maeve Binchy.
